Messy & Damaged Floor Boards

Messy & Damaged Floor Boards

A lot of people tell us their floorboards look a mess, and in turn ask "will they be too bad to sand?"

Many floorboards look in bad condition as they have never seen the light of day. Plumbers and electricians may have cut through the boards leaving them looking a mess, these can easily be fixed by using reclaimed pine floorboards to replaced damaged boards and matched with your existing floor.

We can repair / replace any damaged or messy looking floorboards.

Gap Filling (Resin Mix)

One method is to mix pine dust with resin to make a paste which is then pushed into the gaps between the floorboards. After approximately 45 minutes it is dry and ready to be sanded flush.

Advantages of gap filling – on the ground floor, due to the circulation of cold air brought in through the air bricks; gap filling insulates the room and stops draughts. It also prevents a build up of dirt between floor boards

Floorboards have gaps between them.

Floorboards are filled with a resin mix prior to sanding.

Our Floor Sanding Machines

We pride ourselves on professional floor sanding & finishing. We only use the best German made "Hummel" and Swedish made "Bonner" sanding equipment, which includes a powerful vacuum system allowing substantially reduction in dust.

Our professional refinishers select the proper combination of sand papers needed for the job and do not cut corners.

The Floor Sanding Process

We feel that between 3/4 stages of sanding are required to produce a quality restored floor. A coarse grade sanding belt, then medium and finish on a fine grade.

Please be aware floor sanding is reasonably noisy. All our Floor sanding specialists wear ear defenders and face masks. If you live in a flat or semi-detached property it may be worth while informing your neighbours that you are having your floors restored. We keep noise to respectable hours and work between 9am-5pm.

Staining

Staining a floor is a great way to express yourself either with a bold walnut or subtle     antique pine. Floor staining can bring some warm, rich tones to a room.

A stained floor must be treated with care – you should fix felt protector pads to the bottom of your furniture. In conjunction with a careful cleaning routine you will have a beautiful floor for many years to come.

The Finishing Process

After the floors are sanded and cleaned we apply the first coat of lacquer, this is allowed to dry and can take between 1-2 hours. Next we lightly sand the floor with very fine grit sandpaper (120-180 grit) to reduce raised grains in the wood and create a smooth surface ready for the next coat of lacquer.  Once the second coat has been applied and left to dry another light rub over maybe required. The third and final coat is applied leaving a beautiful wood floor that will last for years.

Fire Hearth Removal

One in three of our jobs will incclude our client wanting an old fire hearth to be removed and restored with floor boards.

First the concrete hearth is chased out, we than uplift the floorboards surrounding the hearth. Finally reclaimed pine floorboards are used to cover the void & staggered in to blend in with the existing floor. This area is now ready to be sanded.

Gap Filling (Wood Slivers)

The second method is to insert & glue wood slivers, made up from reclaimed pine into the gaps between the floorboards and the sand flush.

Advantages of gap filling – on the ground floor, due to the circulation of cold air brought in through the air bricks; gap filling insulates the room and stops draughts. It also prevents a build up of dirt between floor boards
